dermal fillers

Fillers are a popular, swift and excellent non-surgical method to reduce the appearance of ageing or simply enhance the areas of our face where we naturally lack projection or definition. As we age, the skin’s supporting structures, such as the dermis changes, fat layers descend and bone resorbs. The appearances of ageing are often related to a loss of volume in certain areas – such as thinner lips, hollow cheeks and thinner skin around the eyes.

Essentially, fillers can be divided into two groups, temporary or permanent. The fillers used by Dr. Priya Shah are all temporary fillers with safer risk profiles. There are many fillers on European market and the brand names and types seem to change very frequently. It is best to stick to tried and tested brands of filler which have been in use for some time. We understand these products and their safety profile much better and their results are more predictable. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Teosyal are very popular.

Dermal filler is made from a product called Hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring sugar that exists in almost all living organisms. Its key role is to absorb water and transport nutrients to the skin, ensuring that the structure and volume is maintained. Fillers come in different consistencies to be used in different facial areas and according to your skin structure. They are injected into facial hollows to recreate smooth contours of younger skin by replacing volume loss. They also absorb eighty times their weight in water making them capable of hydrating ageing skin that has lost volume as collagen has disappeared so softening facial lines and wrinkles further.

How do I avoid swelling and bruising?
To avoid swelling and bruising, you should:
• Not take aspirin, ibuprofen and alcohol for 1 week before and 2 days after treatment.
• Not take Vitamin E, Vitamin C, fish oils, St. John’s Wort or gingko bilboa for 2-3 days before or after treatment.
• Avoid exercise except for walking for 24 hours after the procedure
• Any facial treatments, as well as saunas (or anything involving extreme temperatures) should be avoided for up to 2 weeks.
• Take arnica tablets up to 2 weeks prior to the treatment

Are there any side effects?
After the treatment(s) some common injection-related reactions might occur, such as swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the injection site. These typically resolve spontaneously within 2 to 10 days. Mild bruising or a slight blush might appear at the injection site immediately following treatment and may last for 2-10 days. After treatment, we advise you to avoid touching or rubbing the area to ensure placement of the product is not manipulated, for up to 2 weeks.
Dermal fillers are NOT to be used during pregnancy.
Dr Priya Shah performs all aesthetic treatments in a 2 step process, so you will be invited to attend a review appointment 2-3 weeks post-procedure. At this appointment, any adjustments will be made, if necessary.

How long will the results last?
The longevity of these products is variable and each individual may obtain a different result. On average it tends to be 6-12 months with the product disintegrating more quickly in areas where there is most movement e.g. mouth area. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you. Our treatment provides a long-lasting but not permanent result leaving you the option of refining your treatment in tune with changing taste and fashion
